Im just looking at some integration/extension steps with umbraco.

My thinking for the integration path with an existing app goes as such;

Create a class library project that will use the umbraco dll's. This class library project will perform all the desired data operations and will then be used by other custom apps that wish to communicate with umbraco.

Is this a recommended path?

Finally has anyone been able to reskin umbraco itself? I want a closer look of the actual custom app with umbraco and not its default look. Would it be possible to do this on a even more granular level - where you can customise the look of the actual cms for each application you use it for?
