After using the ecommerce solution for one site and never been really happy with it, I've been looking into other alternatives for making Umbraco work as an ecommerce application (the Codeplex project for the ecommerce extension seems to be progressing quite slowly at the moment).
As I’m in need of making invoices on the fly and my job requires some travelling, I’ve started using e-conomics.com/dk/no/se for sending customers invoices etc. and it seems well thought-through compared to other alternatives and most of all, it does not prevent me from going broke when not being on my own computer. Based on Niels' blog it looks like he's also using the same app.
Anyway, the e-conomics.com/dk/no/se (which is an online accounting system application and unfortunately not free) also opens up for keeping your inventory up-to-date, and from my point of view, this is probably one of the most important things with an ecommerce application as it actually tells the customer whether you’ve got the products he or she wants in stock or not. The most interesting part of the application is that it features a full documented API and therefore should be fairly easy to merge with Umbraco (though not my strongest side).
I’ve had a glance at dashCommerce which looks interesting, but the negative thing about that system when considering using it together with Umbraco is that the end-user will have to use yet another system as he’ll have to register the products in dashCommerce, then manage the rest of his site in Umbraco and in the end also use his normal accounting system.
So have anyone been trying out this (merging the two)? If so, maybe you could share some information. Otherwise, there might be some of you interested in helping out making an extension to Umbraco with this application.

Everyone is welcome to join the ecom project. The reason for the very slow progress is that no one participates.....
The only progress happens when either I or Morten Bock has a ecom project and updates the source. Daniel B. has also helped.
I have also considered e-conomic as a solution for the e-com project but haven't got the time to implement it yet.
I have though implemented a simple ordering function for a customer throught the e-conomic API and it's very simple to use so don't worry about that. And if you think about it its actually a very cheap way to get a full ERP system. And not everything in this world is free.

Nikolas - I have been making very solid progress on the integration of dashCommerce to Umbraco. I think it may be worth your while to evaluate what I have if you can wait a bit - I anticipate releasing a beta within 3 weeks. I'll post on this forum and also at my blog and CodePlex as this progresses. One item to note; dashCommerce is focused on the 'buy now' model of web commerce and as such does not have a built in invoicing feature. This could be easily added by creating an 'Invoice Provider' similar to what has been done here. One could even create a wrapper for the e-conomic.com invoice service - assuming it is exposed. -Paul motusconnect.com :: level-2 certified :: MVP 2008/2009

Søren,
I apologize if you thought I was complaining about the fact that the ecommerce project does not move forward fast enough. You guys are doing a tremendous job! My point was that I’m not sure if the project is moving in the right direction when I compare it with my needs – especially related to keeping track of the inventory. That’s why I’m looking for other solutions and I would really hate to move away from Umbraco for ecommerce projects.
And when you think about the costs for e-conomic I wasn’t complaining at all (just trying to compare it with e.g. dashCommerce). I wanted a cheap accounting system (as I primarily use it nowadays for invoicing) and it was the best solution for me…
Paul,
I’ve looked at your project (also before my first post) and it looks interesting. I’ll watch out for the beta and probably give it a try.

Nikolas - As far as our Commerce for Umbraco project goes it looks like we will offer an invoice payment provider via FreshBooks - a Canadian company with great support for 100+ currencies and something like 300,000 users. They even offer a free level of service that can be utilized if you have 3 or fewer clients and their offering is built on Amazon AWS - which we are believers in here. -Paul motusconnect.com :: level-2 certified :: MVP 2008/2009
