Hi All
I've been asked by our senior developer to have a scout on the web to determine how people handle site backups and versioning with umbraco. Is it a general consensus to backup the database and also backup the xml file that contains the site structure? Also how does Umbraco actually handle versioning, does it clean out 'old' data past so many versions, or a specific time period or is that something we need to do on a regular cycle to keep the database decongested?

My practice is to regularly backup the database as well as the filesystem for the site. Umbraco keeps all versions of content for easy roll-back. If you want to trim the versions to a certain date or number of versions, clean the log, etc. check out Thomas Hoehler's excellent tool at http://www.codeplex.com/ClientTools4Umbraco. cheers, doug.
