Problem:

On one of my websites, I'd like to have a new page of the root named "Wild". However, when I publish that link, nothing shows but a white page. If I name it anything other than Wild, e.g. Sour, it works just fine. I also have the 404 errors being captured and redirected to a Page Not Found page, but that isn't triggered either. Furthermore, if I use the "Preview" button in TinyMCE, it shows fine.

Check it out:

Link that should either show as 404 or actual content, but displays white.

Content as it should be (redirected via Neehouse's redirect package)

Preview version which works:

An actual non-existing page (results in PNF)

Help! Anyone with thoughts? My trash is clean, there is nothing showing the the database that I can see either.

PS: I am not sure if this is the correct category to post this, but I didn't see anything else related to "problems or issues". Feel free to move it.

Thanks Doug for the prompt reply and very interesting....

This node is of type "Text Page", which uses the "Text Page" template which has a master template set to "Master Template", so I don't really think that could be the direct issue. In fact, I use Text Pages all over the place without similar problems.

Any tricks to debug this further?

Further info...

If I rename this exact same node as "Wild2" not changing templates, it works as suspected and no "recursive template" error/warning. If I rename it back to wild, same problem. Is there some mysterious reserved keyword of "wild"?

If I use the preview URL and attach the debugging parameter, also no issue:

This is very peculiar. I can't imagine there's a situation in which "wild" is not allowed as a nodename (indeed, I just tried it on a v3.0.3 installation and it was fine).

Something is obviously not quite right somewhere. But where.... hmmm.

For lack of something else to try, try these things and see if it makes any difference. Any change in behavior would give us a clue.

1. Do you have more than one "wild" node in your site, at any location? If so, rename the other node and leave the problematic node set to "wild". Any change? If so, please explain where these nodes are in your tree.

2. right-click on the very first node in the content tree ('Content') and select the Republish Entire Site menu. Any change?

3. right-click on the top-most node(s) in the content tree and select the Publish menu (be sure to check the 'publish children' box). Repeat for every top-most node until you've done them all. Any change?

4. Temporarily, disable the directory url's and repeat step 3 for the change to take effect. The url will now be /wild.aspx. Any change?

5. Using the ?altTemplate=template-alias-name syntax, try to display the "wild" page and force it to render with a different template. Such as, /wild.aspx?altTemplate=homepage (assuming you have a 'homepage' template).

Let us know what you find out. I'm sure that when this has been resolved we'll kick ourselves for not realizing the problem immediately. I probably will at least :)

cheers,
doug.

#2 took care of it. Thanks for the idea.

What's strange though is that in a previous attempt to fix the problem, I stopped my whole website in the IIS control panel and restarted but the problem persisted. My understanding of the "Republish Entire Site" is that it only cleared in-memory cache, which I figured stopping and restarting the site would take care of.

Thanks Doug!

I have the exact same problem, but in my case the hated word is "home", which is very unfortunate. See this thread:

http://forum.umbraco.org/yaf_postst4297_Blank-page-at-homeaspx.aspx

I "solved" this eventually by changing the name of my home page to "Home Page" but I prefer just "Home." I just now tried it again (having since upgraded to 3.05) but the problem persists. I just tried republishing the entire site (I had tried that before) but it didn't fix it. Oh well.

Wait... I just noticed something... I am sure that, when I was having this problem before, the URL of the home page kept showing up as http://www.mydomain.com/home.aspx and this is what did not work. It showed up in the umbraco GUI and also everywhere I retrieved the friendly URL in XSLT (breadcrumb, site map, search result, etc.). But this time, even though home.aspx still doesn't work, it really doesn't matter because the URL is now showing up as only the domain name, with no document name specified. (Which is exactly what you would expect, BTW). The only significant changes I can think of that might have caused this change are the upgrade to 3.05 and the fact that we added another domain.

At any rate, it appears that I can leave my home page as home.aspx anyway.
