Place your documents in datefolders ( like in the umbracoblog ).

go from

-Parent
--Child

to

-Parent
--Year
---Month
----Day
-----Child

Just install and choose wich documenttype(s) you would like to place in datefolders. You can even move your existing content to datefolders.

This package installs:

- /bin/TG.Umb.DateFolder.dll (assembly)
- /config/TG.Umb.DateFolder/DateFolder.config ( config file containing documenttypes which will be placed in datefolders )
- /usercontrols/DateFolderInstall.ascx ( usercontrol that is displayed during install )

So just install, choose documenttype(s) , choose if you want to move existing content and your set !

Nice work Tim!

Can you allow the configuration to define the level of the date folders. IE, I may only want year, or year/month, or even year/month/day/hour (for really heavy traffic sites) :P

I am mainly after the first two, and was about to create something like this.

Also, allowing multiple doc type configurations would be nice. IE, news, blog, article...

Thanks

Good idea, I will make it possible to define the level. ( now it is always year/month/day )

Greets,

Tim

Hi,

I'm agree with Casey!

Another nice feature would be a configurable value, to determine which property to make the datefolders from (of course only datefolders allowed)... Eg, if you have you own property EventStart (for a calendar)...

Also, define which document type to use, and/or which template to assign.

Love community brainstorming...

My 2 pence worth would be to have the option to change the naming of the date folders and as we are international I guess this should also be a configuration parameter.

By this I mean currently the blog package ( and I assume your package, although I've not played with it yet ) creates the following:

2007/12/16/my-document.aspx

I think it would be good to have the option of doing one or all of the following:

2007/December/16/my-document.aspx

2007/December/16-Sunday/my-document.aspx

2007/Dec/16/my-document.aspx

And of course if this was implemented it would make sense for it to output in using the current site language settings, so if you had a multi-lingual site what used different root nodes for each language and linked pages, in theory as a new item was created and then duplicated to the other languages this would automatically create the URL's in the appropriate language!

Just an idea, thoughts anyone?

Yeah, I thought of doing that. I will give it a try when I work on the next version.

Problem is I don't want the config to be to difficult. I made this package for people that don't know how to create an actionhandler ( so people that don't have .net knowledge ).

Thanks for all the suggestions !

Hi Tim,

a bug to report:

I already had a 2008 folder under my parent so i ended up with

/Parent/2008/7/31/2008/7/31/Item

Also, I'd like to be able to specify the format of the date as my existing posts all use a two digit month...

Perhaps optionally allow the user to specify format during install. I know you wanted to keep things simple. so maybe checkboxes labelled:

'Two digit year'.

Also, I noticed a place holder for this package in coedplex. Are you planning to put the source there?

Thanks!

D.

Hi Darren,

I'll add this to codeplex tonight, so you can adjust it to your needs.

Cheers,
Tim

Cool, wandering if you would like me to push the bug fix back into codeplex?

I've leave date formatting alone.
