So far I'm batting 0 for 3... Best Western Grant Park Hotel says they no longer honor the IIT rate because their contract was not renewed. They offered my $199 for a single. The best I could get was $189 with AAA. Strike one. Best Western River North has no vacancies for the nights of Oct 5 and 6. Strike two. Holiday Inn Chicago City Center is now a Doubletree. They have vacancies but no discount for IIT anymore. Rate for single room? A whopping $329 per night. Crap. Back to the list. I just figured I'd save someone a couple of phone calls. Maybe Casey could update the site.

The Essex Inn requires a minimum 3 night stay at $309 per night. They told me to call back and ask for a different department to find out about the IIT discount. I didn't bother. Wonder if there's any place to pitch a tent...

Okay, I gave up on the IIT list and went to my old standby, Hotels.com. Using a map of the area and my price criteria (trying to keep it under $150 / night), I located this one: Travelodge Downtown, 65 E Harrison St. I went ahead and booked a room. With taxes and all, it came to $320 for 2 nights. They had cheaper rooms but this one includes high speed internet. I have no idea if the hotel is any good -- it's only a two star but it seems to be in a nice location, a stone's throw from Grant Park and the waterfront. I don't know much about Chicago, so hopefully I'm not too far off on thinking this is a nice area. According to Google, it's 4.4 mi – about 8 minutes -- from IIT. http://www.hotels.com/property.do?propertyId=286100&PSRC=OT2&TSRC=1

We've also done a bit of research and placed the options here. I prefer to book via Priceline but some folks favor knowing where they'll stay ahead of time - for those who do I understand that Expedia has the most varied options Also, as a repeat, the services such as Air Bed and Breakfast and Couch Surfing are great for extreme budget travel. Also, VRBO is a favorite of mine when visiting large cities - especially if you can share an apartment. Keep in mind that almost any location near the Red or Green CTA lines makes it an easy trip to IIT as both line stop directly at IIT (35th St).
