Anyone ever thought about wrapping other open source tools into a package for use with Umbraco? I'm new so maybe I just haven't seen them around yet - but was curious... may do it myself if nothing exists. For example two really popular and well made applications are:

www.dotnetblogengine.net
www.yetanotherforum.net

both are cool and would be great additions to umbraco. WIth that being said, what about using something like Subsonic for data access as then once it's extended to use other providers, it will automatically work with Umbraco?

For example, this forum (forum.umbraco.org) is using YAF... now was it integrated as a control or is this just sort of the thing we have to embark manually?

Hi,

Yaf is running on a subdomain web, so not really integrated in umbraco. Here's a link to Adz's blog which has done a umbraco yaf integration: http://www.createsoft.co.uk/blog/?p=18

Also, there's a communitfy effort on a forum4umbraco project, which I'm coordination, but hasn't produced a release.

Short term solution: Take Adz' approach.
Long term solution: Look for forum4umbraco on Codeplex. We'll be starting our development soon now.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
/Dirk
