Hi guys,

Just trying Umbraco4 RC3. Looks good except the menu rendering issue in IE6 seems to still be there.

This a IE6 issue. Not a Umbraco Issue.
It's caused by the lack of support for transparent PNG's in IE6.
By the way...why are people still using IE6. This browser turns 8 coming august. Most people I know change cars quicker than that.

Here some links to give you an idea how old this browser is :

Unfortunately some companies have policies that involves keeping IE6 (and no, I don't understand it either). We're looking to see if we can provide a fix (alternative sprite with icons for IE6), but transparent background PNGs in IE6 not good.

Jeeeez, did I really start this :-)

I always ask these companies if they want to support Netscape Navigator 7 too. Because this browser is younger and was IE6's biggest competitor at the time.
If you tell it's more work (read more costs) to support IE6 some can be persuaded to drop the support.

I agree that many large corporates and public bodies have standardised on IE6, even as recently as last year, and would not have plans to move from it for at least 2 years. To my mind, Umbraco still should support IE6.

Without supporting IE6, Umbraco is limited to a supporting a single version of IE right now, which is a hard sell to any client.

Should I continue to report IE6-related issues with RC3 to this forum, codeplex or neither?

Thanks.

It would be awesome to report IE6 issues in Codeplex. Much appreciated.

I detest IE6 as a browser, but alas many large corporations still insist on using it. My company has dealt with two large public sector clients in the UK just this month whose policy it is to use IE6 as default browser. I don't agree with it or understand it, but it's a simple fact. So I hope the team bare this in mind.

As mentioned there is a jQuery IE transparent PNG fix knocking around:

Haven't tried it, but maybe it could be incorporated into the admin?

We fixed a big bunch of IE6 related issues today, so we'll have support for IE6 in the final release. Thanks for all the feedback - we take it very seriously and walk, not talk when we say that =)

The answer is simple.
Companies use server hosted applications (Peoplesoft, Oracle apps etc) and these applications do not work correctly in new versions of IE.

There are generally updates to these apps, but if there is no business value to do so they say, if it aint broke dont fix it.
