How can I override the default request handler? I want to write my own (I have valid reasons), but not necessarily modify the core.

You can't :-(
I'll resolve this in v3 (I've seen your issue in codeplex), but for v2.x you'll need to modify the core or run your projects as a separate application (in a subfolder).
