I've been thinking... wouldn't it be cool to create a full website hosting environment for clients through Umbraco.

here's what i had in mind (not sure if this is actually possible, or just a pipe dream, but i guess that's where you more knowledgeable types might be able to knock some sense into me)

Umbraco can host multiple sites within 1 database right? The advantages to the developer of this are:
- only 1 umbraco installation to upgrade
- ability to enhance feature offerings to all clients easily
- make changes in one place, and they appear on all clients sites or admin interfaces

Now, taking this 1 step further, I'd love to make the Umbraco admin interface a little more useful for my clients. Having a separate section (say 'Hosting') which displays a summary of the client's hosting environment, including:
- current website storage usage (in MB)
- current storage limit
- current bandwidth usage/ limit
- email accounts setup
- outstanding support request statuses
- etc
Then the client can have the ability to do the following:
- submit new support tickets
- track support tickets
- create/ edit email accounts
- change passwords
- get help on any aspect of their site mgt (both centralised and more specific to the area they're in)
- etc

So what you can offer to clients is a single login where they can manage everything to do with their website... its really just for basic users, nothing too high end like creating databases or anything. Wouldn't it be great to centralise both the website & hosting management under 1 login??

I'm interested in your thoughts on this... who thinks they'd benefit from such functionality? How much work would be required to get all this happening? Anybody interested in help make it happen?

I know its a bit pie in the sky type of idea, but i really think it could work. or maybe i'm just dreaming again???

Cheers
Greg

hmmm... no responses... well i thought it was a good idea.

thanks Michael... I have alot of learning to do before i'm ready to take on such an endeavour, but I will slowly slowly start implementing it... probably start with a ticketing support system, then add things like help/documentation, domain administration, etc.

yes, lots of work. but how cool would it be!? :)
