Do you guys plan on rewriting the authentication to support pluggable ASP.NET 2.0 membership providers?

This was originally scheduled for v3 (together with the profile provider), but was pulled out. It will appear in v3.next currently not scheduled (realistically it'll hit the streets late this fall).
However you can still use the .net profile and membership providers with umbraco as you would with traditional .net dev, but obviously you'll just don't get the benefits of the member area in umbraco.

Jeeeez, did I really start this :-)

When is the Membership providers plugin going to be released? Is it anytime soon?

Hey Jason, We can probably work together because I plan on working on this component as well. I plan on working on the membership and roles providers. I was thinking of wrapping the existing umbraco authentication/authentication to SqlMembershipProvider and SqlRolesProvider so that will the used by default. Thanks, John

To be more specific on the implementation it will be something like this:
Wrap all the existing authentication/authorization method calls inside SqlMembershipProvider/SqlRolesProvider and then call the authentication/authorization in the asp.net pages using the membership/roles classes.

That's exactly what I need. But instead of investing in developing a 3rd party solution, if umbraco team is already planing to support ASP.NET membership in the umbraco core, I'd prefer to get it bumped in priority by sponsoring the development. It's much stronger code in the long run because it is tested/used/refined by the whole umbraco community.

I think thats the plan. Umbraco will have a developers meeting next week to discuss the roadmap and prioritize tasks. Please check http://www.umbraco.org for more details.

John - What was the outcome of the discussion WRT the membership provider? Is this something we'll see in v3.1? I have something working here for the time being but I'm not thrilled with it - I'd classify it as a hack. I'd much rather use a core team developed implementation. Yes, Membership providers will be available for version 3.1.
3.1 should have membership provider support for both Umbraco Users and Members and also support for Active Directory.
The latest source code already has the umbraco membership provider setup but it still requires extensive testing... feel free to test it out.
Thanks,
John Cruz
