Has anyone done this or thought about doing this? I'm keenly interested in 'standarizing' on a DAL implementation across all the web platforms we use - Umbraco, DNN, dashCommerce - and already use SubSonic DAL with DNN and dashCommerce.

Thoughts for or against are welcomed.

Regards,
-Paul

SubSonic is really cool, however we've settled for LINQ to SQL as the DAL for umbraco v4. That might be a con as using SubSonic would break future updates for you :-/

Jeeeez, did I really start this :-)

One way to solve that though, would be to have a DAL provider model in v4. Maybe we could discuss this when you come over in December :-)

FYI - Rob Conery (cretaor of SubSonic) was hired by Microsoft a couple of weeks ago to work fulltime on SubSonic:

http://blog.wekeroad.com/2007/10/26/microsoft-subsonic-and-me/

"...my job will be to build out SubSonic as the “sweetness” on top of ASP.NET and (more notably) the new MVC platform. SubSonic will be the convention-driven toolset for Microsoft’s new MVC framework. Someone slap me." -Rob Conery

Neils -

I'd definately like to discuss using the provider model for the DAL in v4+.

I saw Rob Connery speak at OpenForce last week and his new relationship with Microsoft makes the SubSonic provider even more compelling. I think there are lots of good reasons for a provider based DAL - not the least of which is the possibility of using Umbraco on DB platforms other than MSSQL.

I'll ask Rob if I can post his slide deck and code from his talk and post the URL here.

@Kenneth: Yup, I also follow Rob's blog and Microsoft is getting one fab. team together for the MVC project.

@Paul: Let's go for the provider model (which makes perfect sense) and then see whether to use LINQ to SQL or SubSonic as the default provider (there's loads of pro/cons for both).

As promised, here is Rob Conery's (and Jim Bonnie's) slide deck from their SubSonic presentation at OpenForce '07 last week.
