How difficult would it be to add one or more properties to the standard collection of user properties and allow them to be edited from the users module in the umbraco GUI? I would like to add at least one (URL) and possibly others, which can be displayed on pages created by that user.

Did you look into setting up a member type? Member types function similar to document types in that you can add attributes.
Learned this from Doug Robar;)

Jason, I don't use members for my Web site - just users. My understanding is that members are just for the Web site itself, not the umbraco back-end. Is that right? What I want to do is set it up so that I can extend the properties of my umbraco users. Is that possible?

Sorry about that...I still don't always keep that umbraco member/user split in the front of my brain. I'm not sure about extending the users in the manner you need. Although, it would be nice to have user types similar to the member type functionality.
