Hi ya,

I am currently looking at creating a membership area on our website but I do not want to store the user details in umbraco. We have an external database were we store all our users.

Is there any support in umbraco for this or will I have to customize the code to do this and if so what would you guys suggest?

Thanks
Dwane

Hi, Dwane,

There are three approaches that you can take. First is to use the existing membership capability within umbraco. Second is to wait for v3.1 and the membership provider stuff that John Cruz is working on...

"John Cruz has started implementing Membership Providers to allow for support of LDAP/AD, and your custom member DB for authentication. This should be released in v 3.1."

You can follow his progress and test early code at http://www.codeplex.com/umbraco/

The third option is to make your own. John H. and Jason J. have both made their own login routines against external databases. They have a nice discussion at http://forum.umbraco.org/19747.

cheers,
doug.
