I know this has been asked before but I don't seem able to find it. Basically I need to offer a page where members can sign into their account and update their profile, this will basically a node which the site's administrator will also be able to edit so do I: 1. Allow logins to the backend to the users -if so how can I restrict access so they can only edit their page -or- 2. Add the pages and write a custom web control that hooks into the membership user and if it's the administrator of the profile allow them to edit online? Any pointers would be nice :) Tim

Thanks, I'm already using those elsewhere but I need the page to be editable by both the user and the administratpr -something I'm not sure is possible with Umbraco. Looking through the project brief I don't think Umbraco is suitable anyway. Tim

Hi, Tim, As you say, umbraco isn't the best tool for every job and if you have needs umbraco doesn't fit then you'll save yourself a lot of headache by finding a solution that meets your requirements. Before you abandon umbraco, though, consider asking the forum for advice. Collectively, we've created thousands and thousands of sites and might have solutions for your requirements. Or, we might tell you that what you're trying to do is not well suited to umbraco's strengths. As to editable pages... another idea would be to create user accounts in umbraco for the leaders that can edit pages, and set up a "content channel" (rather than allowing direct umbraco access) and have them edit their page(s) using LiveWriter, Word2007, or any other tool that uses the MetaBlog API. I've done that for a site recently and it was a very good solution that made it easy for sponsors to keep their profile page up to date without requiring them to learn new software, or even log in to umbraco. To find more info about this, just google for: content channel umbraco cheers, doug.

Thanks Doug however I'm not abandoning Umbraco on a whim but on the basis that having been sent the client’s brief I don’t think it’s suitable as the CMS aspect plays such a minute part of the entire project which appears to be more interested in automatically calculating and updating league tables. I like the idea of Umbraco and where possible have integrated it into projects but I don’t think that this project is right for it. I’ll keep in mind your idea of content channels for future projects but I think it would be worth integrating this functionality into some form of user admin access as I know of several projects that would benefit. As for putting it out to the forum, I do tend to as you should know :tease: Just my 2p :) Tim

Sorry, Tim, I didn't realize you were "thesitedoctor" Yes, you're right that umbraco is really built for content that is handled (created and/or "consumed") by humans, rather than computer generated content. Sounds like your league tables and such recommends another solution. If you find something particularly suited to that kind of content I'd be interested to hear about it. cheers, doug.
