I cannot find a description of what the "permissions" option does (right click on a node in the "Content" section), or how it works.

It appears as though all users get the same set of permissions on all nodes/files. If I wanted to limit a user to a specific section or pages, I would have to go through all of the rest of the site and remove their permission to Update, etc.

I also assume that everytime a new page was added, those that do not have permission to update it would need to be removed from the permissions list.

If that is how it works, then it is not very practical! We would like to be able to create a sub-section of the site (say, chess club) and only allow the owner of that section to edit those specific pages (existing and new pages) and nothing else.

Is this possible within Umbraco or could it be added in somehow?

I know that "writers" do not have the ability to publish content/changes so this could be used as a control mechanism, but it does not allow us to give full control to specific content areas.

The change notification system is another grey area for me - does this have to be set per user, for every content page?

Hi, Gordon,

I've never needed to use the access controls on a specific node so I can't answer that part of your question.

But it does seem as though making your "chess club owner" user an "Editor" (rather than an administrator or writer), and setting the "start in" content node as the top of the chess club pages would do what you want.

Administrator = do anything
Editor = publish
Writer = save (not publish)

You could even give the chess club owner user "Administrator" rights, but you would want to then remove the "admin" section from those they are allowed to interact with... or they'd be able to change their own permissions and starting nodes :p

cheers,
doug.

Well, you learn something new every day! The "Start In" feature looks like it could be just the solution I need!

So, the next question - how does the notification system work? If the "chess club" editor(s) make changes and want to publish those changes, who gets notified and how? Is this stuff documented anywhere?
