after installing win2003 web editioni got the following permissions errors in the umbarco 3 configuration wizard

- Checking default folder permissions:
./css : Failure!
./config : Failure!
./data : Failure!
./media : Failure!
./xslt : Failure!

- Checking optional folder permissions for packages:
./bin : Failure!
./umbraco : Failure!
./usercontrols : Failure!

- Cache (the umbraco.config file): Failed!

as stated in the Umbarco3.0 configuration wizardi gave ASPNET modify permissions. i still get the same error.

Give NETWORK SERVICE or whatever user your app pool is running under modify permissions on folders that currently fail!

I'd be surprised if you didn't run into any other problems later on.

I've never heard of this solutions, but that's just me. Maybe someone else can confirm this?

The installation would not have been able to update the web.config as it didn't have write access. That's why there would be no version information. Changing the value will stop the installer running (and you should remove the /install/ directory when you're done btw).

You will still need to set the folder permissions. Some web hosts do this automatically but certainly for Windows Server 2003, you need to give NETWORK SERVICE modify permissions to the directories the installer would have listed.

If you haven't created any document types before, then, yes, dropdown will be empty when trying to create new content.

That's too bad, but really has nothing to do with installing umbraco. I'd guess you've installed umbraco over the previous starter kit install.

To be really, truly honest, I would go for a reinstall. Can't remember how many times I've installed umbraco, including reinstalls because of stupid errors.

Hey, don't get discouraged, it may be hard times at first, but once you've get everything up and running, you'd wish you'd never done anything else :)

If you need assistance in getting up and running again using a fresh install, shoot, people will be there to assist.

Good luck,
/Dirk

i pointed the umbraco instsll to a different directory.......curious

this is not the first time i've had to reinstall software repeatedly to get it to work.....

i wrote my first web site in late 1995 and my first data driven one in early 1995 (being a data guy) getting discouraged is not in my makeup or i'd be working at burger king by now! :))
