How to tell whether a content item is being published for the 1st time. Options

Hello,

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to determine whether an item in the content tree is being published for the 1st time.

I want to fire an action handler on on the 1st publish.

I was in TeamSite world where each save is a version not each publish :)
