A while back there was some talk about hosting another umbraco event in the US this fall. Any plans yet?

Hi, Pete, The big idea of what I'd like to arrange in the USA is... A nation-wide umbraco meetup with Niels, Per, the MVPs from the US, and as many umbraco users as possible from the USA and Canada for a two-day umbraco extravaganza of fun, learning, networking, caring, and sharing. We might also arrange a training session before or after the event if there's interest. The first thing to do is select a venue/location and date. The venue would need to hold 30-50 people for two days, have wifi, good access to an international airport, decent lodging and food options, etc. etc. And... is reasonably priced. If someone has such a space in their offices we'd consider that as well. I'm tentatively thinking the location will be Atlanta GA, Raleigh/Durham NC, Pittsburgh PA, New York City, Boston MA, or Chicago IL. There are umbraco users in those areas and they meet the other requirements for location as well. Also, it's easiest for someone in a given area to coordinate the facilities since they can check them out personally. The date for the event is probably more of an issue at this point. We should have at least 3 months advance notice for the venue and date so people can plan, get approval and funding, etc. That also gives us time to coordinate all the details and plans. I've been buried with work and haven't had time to schedule anything yet, which is why I've not announced a plan. I'd hoped for end of September but that's really too close now. Niels isn't available in October or November (3rd child is due and he rightly wants to be there!). That pushes us to December, which is terrible because of holiday travels. Suddenly we're into January. Jan/Feb is certainly possible but perhaps suggests a location in the more southerly areas of the country considering the weather in the north at that time. I really want to have a big umbraco event in the states in the coming months! What I need at this point is someone to help with the planning and organizing details. If you (or anyone else) is interested, please contact me through my website's contact form. cheers, doug.

@Peter... lol! The US event isn't a replacement for CodeGarden, it would be in addition to it. You can bet I'll be at CG09 as well and hope to see you there again next year. There are a lot of US umbraco users and doing a massive meetup could help strengthen the community in the states. I also hope that as people get a taste of the wonder and magic that happens when a bunch of motivated umbraco users get together they'd want to share and join in the international community by coming to CodeGarden '09 too! Naturally, you're invited to come to the whatever US event we organize. I'm not trying to be exclusivist, but I would like to promote umbraco in the states and develop more community activity here. cheers, doug.

Well, according to what you've written so far: an event including Niels might take until januari/februari. Well, might as well make that June and call it CodeGarden ;-)
Ofcourse I have no clue whatsoever what Niels and Per are planning (or allready have planned) for Codegarden 09, but I was being a bit serious on that hint though.
Which gives you the chance to do an earlier event without the core-team, but you DO have some MVP's in the US right?
Just thinking out loud here, ignore me if you think I'm rammbling :D

Cool. Not trying to be over optimistic here, but maybe also an option of an even bigger venue if there's interest. Umbraco *is* growing in the US and maybe it's bigger than we all know (US is now by far the most visiting country on umbraco.org).

To paraphrase Niels, did I really start this thread? ;-) In 17 hours we went from "will there be a US event" to "mark your calendars". Pretty impressive for a bunch of geeks, huh? This is exciting! Doug, I wish I could help out but I'm afraid there isn't much I can do given my location and time constraints. But I will sure figure out a way to be there. Already thinking about how to come up with the funds. Let's see. What can I find around here to sell on eBay...

Pete- you rock! thanks for getting the ball rolling! NH, nice banner! Doug, are you even in the US right now? Casey, i may lean on you for cash to hold venues :P

I'm an American but currently working / living in the Philippines and will just happen to be back in the US late September / October. Probably be in the Chicago area during those dates as well (hoping to catch a Notre Dame football game). I think there's got to be hundreds (if not more) people like myself that may read these boards but aren't really known. I'm definitely an Umbraco evangalist (about 8 installs) and coming to an event and meeting all the bad a$$ developers would just give me more fuel to continue to sell the idea of using Umbraco to my clients/ friends.

Hey Guys - really glad to hear all the discussion on a US event! I have wanted to come to Copenhagen but International travel is just too prohibitive. Very cool!
I am NOT familiar with that many venues in Chicago, but I am within driving distance (3 hours) so I would be willing to take a day and drive down to vet the facilities, ask questions -- whatever is needed etc.

Alright, I thought I would start building a little list of potential Chicago venues for comment. This is not done - IT'S IN PROGRESS so check back. If anyone is more familiar with Chicago Venues and has comments or suggestions for other's or things I should consider please comment! If someone suggests good reason to avoid a venue, I'll remove it from my del.icio.us list. Doug/Neils - just let me know if this seems like what you're looking for group. Also, if you could email me offline with some ballpark cost ideas or if someone better can vet the Chicago venues. Basic Criteria: Quote: - Within 30 minutes of O' Hare International Airport. - At least 75 people (Doug suggested 30-50 people for two days, Neils suggested "something bigger") - Something has plenty of wifi and internet access, AV and projectors etc.
