umbracoExtension and umbracoBytes for doctypes with several uploads? Options

I have a doctype with two uploads: one for images and one for documents. I also need to make use of the file meta-data that Umbraco supplies via umbracoExtension and umbracoBytes. But when a single doctype contains several uploads there seems to be no way of telling Umbraco which file to look at for meta-data. The behavior seems to be that umbracoExtension and umbracoBytes fetches its data from the most recently uploaded file.

I know this can be solved by making one of the properties a media picker, but in this specific case it doesn't suit my needs well.
